Cleveland, OhioKids in Flight's marquee event, Wings of Wonder, will resume later this year with a new format.
Kids in Flight has created a new "Co Pilot" program that offers free airplane rides around Cleveland to critically ill children and their families. Rather than scheduling the rides one day a year during the Wings of Wonder event, the rides will now be offered year-round, when it is convenient for all. Volunteer pilots will be able to spend more time educating children about the joys of aviation, and each individual flight will be a bit longer.
"Wings of Wonder continues to use aviation as a tool to empower seriously ill children and their families through flight experiences and educational programs," said Maria Weybrecht, Kids in Flight founder.
The 2010 version of Wings of Wonder will be a reunion of Kids in Flight families who participated in past events in addition to new families who have interest in the program. Families will enjoy food, games and entertainment in a festival-like atmosphere and be able to see displays of a variety of aircraft.
The event is Saturday, Sept. 18, 1:00 to 5:00 PM at Continental Airline's hangar at Hopkins Airport. (The event is private – families must register in advance.)
More information about how to register for the event is available on the organization's website, www.kidsinflight.org.
Even though the Wings of Wonder event is private, a new, public event to support Kids in Flight programs has been created.
The Soaring for Dreams Charity Gala, will be immediately following Wings of Wonder on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 7:00 to 11:00pm at Continental Airline's hangar at Hopkins Airport.
"So often I'm asked 'what can I do to help; I don't have a sick child but I want to get involved,' " said Weybrecht. "With the Soaring for Dreams Charity Gala, we now have a way for everyone to support our mission and have a wonderful, fun evening at the same time."
Attendees must register for the gala in advance by visiting www.kidsinflight.org/sfd.html.
