Cleveland, Ohio – For the past five years, Wings of Wonder has given hundreds of area kids dealing with serious illness a chance to temporarily soar above their problems.
This year's event is July 21 at Burke Lakefront Airport and is expected to give about 300 to 350 kids and their families sightseeing flights around the Cleveland area with experienced, licensed pilots. Wings of Wonder is organized by Kids in Flight™, a local non-profit organization founded by cancer survivor Maria Weybrecht, 24, of Eastlake.
"We want to give these children a chance to escape," said Weybrecht. "Wings of Wonder enables families to be together in a stress-free environment. For one day, these children are not sick. For one day, they are just kids having fun."
In addition to offering airplane rides, the Wings of Wonder event includes other aviation-related activities including arts and crafts, educational exhibits, clowns, magicians, food, music and more. Historical and military aircraft such as the Commemorative Air Force World War II SNJ-4 and Mansfield Air National Guard C-130H Hercules will also be on display. The entire event is at no cost to participants.
Kids in Flight will be accepting registrations from families with seriously ill children at www.kidsinflight.org now through July 9. For those interested in volunteering or making a donation, information is also available on the website.
NOTE TO MEDIA: If you would like to send a videographer/photographer up with a participating family on July 21, please send an email to Susan Shaw at susan@polakoffpr.com by July 16.
